When buying a used ThinkPad, remember to check that the BIOS is not locked with a supervisor's password and that Computrace is not enabled and activated. When buying a new ThinkPad, consider taking the IPS screen option if possible, as it doesn't cost much. Not only will it have better brightness, colour, contrast and viewing angles - you will most probably more than make up the investment when selling it. Corporate bulk purchasers don't usually go for it. The only tools you need for servicing a ThinkPad are a set of small screwdrivers and a nylon spudger (for taking the screen and keyboard bezels off), and possibly a pair of tweezers. A can of compressed air may be useful too, and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds are good for cleaning, but not on the screen.

I'm getting conflicting information regarding the maximum RAM; a manual on Lenovo's website seems to think the maximum is 128MB, but Crucial says 256MB and a forum post says 512MB. Does anyone have any definitive information on this? Additionally, I'm looking to upgrade the hard drive. From what I understand, it's a 2.5' EIDE drive.
Is there any maximum size? They all seem rather expensive; does anyone have a suggestion for spending less money (i.e., using standard 2.5' IDE drives or finding a 2.5' IDE SSD drive)? Finally: I was interested in replacing the modem card with a wifi card. Does anyone know how feasible this is?. WiFi: Use a The 2000-era ThinkPads probably use internal MiniPCI (extra large, old style), but I wouldn't bother with it. ThinkPads are infamous for their whitelists. Hard Drive: IDE isn't very high performance anyway, so cheap flash memory should be fine.
Just use a CompactFlash card with a $5-15 IDE-to-CF adapter. Any adapter will do, as long as it is 2.5'. I recommend, since you can plug two cards in at once! (1 master, 1 slave drive).
If you want to use SDCards (which are significantly cheaper and higher capacity than CF cards), make sure you use as well. It is designed to send the correct IDE signals (important for the iPod). All this might seem counterintuitive, but don't risk your money with strange, cheap CF-to-SDCard adapters. Stick to what works.
